The AEA, Association of
European Airlines, also monitors the regularity of air transport. The results of 1997 show
that Czech Airlines flies with a lower number of delays than the total average of other
carriers associated in AEA. Companies such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM,
and Swissair are also AEA members. On time performance is a major product quality
requirement. CSA achievements in this area are even more remarkable when considering
influencing factors which are entirely beyond CSA's direct control. Prague is centred in a
highly congested international area, where flights are subject to international air
traffic flow. A delay due to technical reasons occurred to only 1.2% of CSA flights on
medium and short routes in the whole network, which secured CSA a position in the first
quarter of the AEA scale. CSA is also a leader amongst European airline companies where
long distance flights are concerned. CSA held the number one position in least number of
delays due to technical reasons for most of 1997.
High level qualifications, training and experience in CSA's
operational, technical and flight personnel all contributed to regularity, or on time
performance. Continuous innovation and use of the AVES computer system and its PORTOS and
W-PLANER modules, which ease and support the decision processes of Central Dispatch during
operative control of the company's air traffic, also play an important role.
The high quality of CSA aircraft maintenance, by the units
of CSA's repair base, was also a major factor in reducing delays and maintaining on time
performance. This reputation has been extremely valuable and has contributed to CSA
successfully winning contracts for the technical maintenance of aircraft of other
airlines. For example, a long term agreement for technical support for maintenance of
B737-300 aircraft was successfully concluded with Fischer Air during 1997. Maintenance for
other airline customers was also undertaken, such as - Bemoair and Unimpex Enterprises for
which CSA provided technical support on the maintenance of IL-62M aircraft. Traditionally
important other customers continued to be government agencies such as the Czech Government
Flying Service, the Czech Ministry of Defence, and the Slovak Government Flying Service
where CSA helped with the maintenance of their Tupolev aircraft.
